The Work Expert strives to contribute to the wellbeing of workers by setting an industry standard to determine fitness and ability to perform work with a physical component in a safe, healthy and productive manner across all phases of employment by means of an objective, reliable and reproducible work assessment tool.
who we are
The Work Expert (TWE), previously the RFA-JV, started as a joint venture between Anglo Gold Ashanti Health and Anglo American Platinum in 2000 with the aim of developing and maintaining an appropriate work assessment tool for all types of employment with a physical component (light to very heavy) to be used as part of medical surveillance. The Rehabilitation and Functional Assessment (RFA) Test Battery was established with this in mind and has since grown and developed into an assessment battery that is valid and reliable, user-friendly, and technologically advanced to meet the current needs of our clients. The RFA Test Battery can be used in any industry or setting where work with a physical component is performed.
TWE currently provides services to 11 National and International Mining houses and a number of privately owned companies with a total of 23 RFA Centres across the country. The TWE database currently hosts 1.17 million work capacity assessments, thus providing a wealth of information to refine test standards and research aspects impacting on work capacity.
With 45 years of collective experience as pioneers in the field of work capacity and an established work capacity assessment test battery, we are in the unique position to assist in caring for the health and safety of employees or clients referred for work capacity assessments.

RFA TEST
BATTERY
The test battery is supported by TWE Software and applications. The Job Risk Profile Library and automated assessments allows for performing numerous assessments on a daily basis, without compromising on quality.
Test methodology allows for the assessment of prospective employees for placement purposes, assessments as part of the return-to-work process, disability management and rehabilitation monitoring. Regular assessment of employees’ fitness levels against standardised norms also forms a valuable part of health promotion and management.

TEST STANDARDS YOU CAN TRUST
- RFA Test standards are derived from literature, scientific principles, and the testing of healthy individuals and making it possible to identify high-risk individuals. These are continuously reviewed to ensure they remain up to date and in line with the most recent research findings.
- Objective and standardised test results – A scientific approach is followed with test scores derived from norms rather than based on subjective rating systems.
- Test Methodology accommodates employees (prospective and in-service) or clients with limitations / impairments or disabilities by permitting adaptive techniques for executing tasks provided that these are performed safely. Test standards are set at a sub-maximal level (‘self-paced’), rather than against an unrealistic maximal performance level, thereby underpinning the principle of minimum fitness standards. Testing at this level thus prevents discrimination in terms of age, gender and/or disability.
- Test outcomes allow for predicting endurance (cardiorespiratory fitness) over a full work shift by means of a combined biomechanical and work physiology approach which is the missing component in many FCE assessments. Ergonomic principles are also incorporated.
- The flexibility and versatility of the test battery allows for the assessment of any form of physical work, from supervisory to very heavy work, in nearly any industry.

If required, Functional Job Risk Analyses link directly with work capacity assessments. Jobs are analysed and imported to the Job Library created for each client. The physical intensity of the job (sedentary, roaming, light, moderate , heavy and very heavy) is automatically calculated based on the analysis. The Library also allows for identification of high-risk occupations, allowing redesign or instituting of the necessary controls. It also has a quality control system in place to record revisions and updates.
Job Risk Profiles / OREPs can be exported to an Excel format.
